Holiday Party Ideas

Here are some ideas for a holiday party that will be a welcome change from the endless cocktail parties people attend during the holiday season.

Gift Wrapping -- Food Basket -- Gift GamePlus One -- Cookie Exchange

Gift Wrapping Party

Why not get the girls together and kill two birds with one stone this holiday season?  Sure, everyone loves to wrap presents while watching their favorite TV show, but wouldn't it be better if you could all get together, gossip, get your gifts wrapped, AND pick up a few gift ideas for those hard-to-shop-for people?  This party couldn't be easier - a few appetizers, a couple bottles of wine, a few pairs of scissors, lots of tape, and some holiday music - and you're on your way!

Food Basket Exchange

This is the perfect use for all those gift baskets we get during the holidays.  Have everyone bring the parts of the gift baskets they won't use, and exchange them during the party. This can be an organized event or you can have guests drop their contributions off on a table and everyone can pick something up on their way out. The tomato tapenade that you hate may be someone else's idea of a perfect appetizer on Christmas.  And what better way to get together with friends, not spend any more money on presents, and potentially get a good laugh at the oddest item up for exchange!

The Gift Game

This can be a fun way to spend an evening with a group of friends or co-workers without having to worry about buying the perfect gift for a specific person.  Invite everyone at the party to bring one wrapped gift, under $20.  You can also set a theme for the gifts if you like - funny, kitchen/bath, candles, office oriented, etc.  At a set time during the party, everyone will gather round, draw numbers to determine the order for choosing gifts, and then the first person picks a present from the pile to open.  The next person to go can either take an opened present from another person or pick a new present from the pile.  Since everyone brought a present, everyone will leave with one, and there can be quite a bit of jockeying at the end of the game as people try to snatch their choice of present!

Plus One

This party can be applied to ANY holiday – although it can be the most fun during the Valentine’s season.  Invite your “normal” group of friends, but require their RSVP to include a friend of theirs that you don’t know.  It can be their co-worker, their hair dresser, someone they know from the gym or church.  You’ll be surprised at how excited people get to meet new people – and if you are like our lucky friends – you can meet your husband of 17 years at one of these events!

Cookie Exchange

This is a great way to get the girls together, and doesn’t have to be relegated to the Christmas Season.  Any winter afternoon is a great time to get together and eat cookies – or in the months leading up to Thanksgiving is another time to get people started thinking about baking.  Invite your friends over for an afternoon tea or a cocktail hour, and ask them to bring a batch of their favorite cookies. Set up a card table to display everyone's confections, and set out gift bags and ribbons. Everyone at the party can then make up their own gift bags so favors aren’t a necessity at this party!Joy Of Baking is a great site to find every cookie recipe you will need for your party!
We hope that these ideas will motivate you to have some people over, or volunteer to host the office event.  The holidays don't have to be stressful or overwhelming - just use our guideline to stay ahead of the game, remember to have fun, and never forget that it's easy to throw a Simple Feast.
